Missouri Hunting

Missouri is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts or just plain folks who enjoy a walk in the woods. Missouri has glades, prairies, savannas, caves, forests, and wetlands, which offer a diversity of wildlife including whitetail deer, feral hogs, black bear, turkey, and more.

Missouri offers two deer hunting seasons, which are firearms and archery. Each year hunters take nearly 4 million trips to the field pursuing Missouri whitetail deer. Many monster racks are taken in Missouri in the fall, and southern Missouri has shown an increase in whitetail buck with large racks. A world record non-typical rack was found in St. Louis County in 1981, which scored 333 1/3 points. In 2010, 238,921 whitetail deer were harvested by hunters.

Missouri feral hogs may be hunted throughout the year. No hog permit is required but special restrictions apply during fall firearms deer and turkey season.

Missouri boasts some of the best turkey hunting in the nation. The number of turkey harvested annually in Missouri is among the highest of any state in the country. The total number of turkey harvested at the end of the 2011 spring season was 38,327. The fall firearm turkey take was 7,077 with fall archery coming in at 2,923. Missouri hunter satisfaction with their turkey hunting experience is high.

Black bear are native to Missouri, but are protected in this state. They are making a comeback due to their management strategies but it will be a few years yet before the first bear hunting season.

Small game animals, such as squirrel, cottontail and swamp rabbits, male pheasant, crow, and quail may be hunted in Missouri. Trapping is also allowed in MO for coyote, badger, gray and red fox, mink, and bobcat. A federal Duck Stamp is required for hunting waterfowl in Missouri.

If you were born after January 1, 1967, a hunter education certificate is required. A few notes on protected species within the state: Mountain Lions are protected in Missouri, but please report sightings. Ruffed grouse and jack rabbits are also protected.

The “Show-Me State” can show you the whitetail hunt of your lifetime.
