Virginia Hunting

Virginia offers some great hunting opportunities.  The most popular game species in Virginia is the whitetail deer.  However, many other species can also be hunted including black bear, elk, eastern turkey, and waterfowl.

Virginia boasts 850,000 to 1 million whitetail deer, and the herd size continues to increase. The total whitetail deer kill for 2010 was 219,797 with 95,543 of these being antlered males. Different areas of the state have different deer limits. There is no minimum antler length except in certain counties of Virginia.

Elk are also seen in the state of Virginia, but in small herds. These elk came from a restoration in Kentucky. Virginia elk may be taken during any open deer season, except in certain counties. No other license is required. The state of Virginia is discussing an Elk Management Program.

Black bear population in Virginia is high and healthy and is growing yearly. Black bear can be found throughout the state. In 2010-2011 seasons, 2,221 black bear were harvested in Virginia. Archers took 423 of these bear. The highest concentration of black bear is seen in the Blue Ridge, Allegheny Mountains, and around the Great Dismal Swamp.

Turkey continues to increase and at present there are approximately 180,000 birds in Virginia. The highest density of turkey is in the Tidewater, South Mountain, and South Piedmont Region. In the fall of 2010, 2687 turkey were harvested. In the spring season of 2011, 15m689 were taken in Virginia.

Waterfowl is also popular and the population of species is increasing. Ducks, geese, brant and swans are available to be hunted. You do need to register with the Harvest Information Program. Also, you will need a VA Migrating Waterfowl Conservation Stamp and a Federal Duck Stamp. Small game is also available, such as: dove, quail, ruffed grouse, rabbit, squirrel and woodcock.
