South Carolina Hunting

South Carolina is home to a wide variety of habitat. South Carolina is divided into 3 geographical areas: Atlantic Coastal Plain, Piedmont, and Blue Ridge Region. The Atlantic Coastal Plain is quite flat to rolling hills to sand hills, covers two-thirds of South Carolina. The Piedmont Region is a higher elevation. The Blue Ridge, which is in the northwestern corner of the state, is mountainous. But the elevation rarely exceeds 3,000 feet. In this state, you can see black bear and dolphins in the same day! South Carolina offers excellent hunting for a variety of animals.

The estimated South Carolina bear population is 1,125. They are found mostly in the Mountain / Upper Piedmont and Northern Coastal Counties. In 2010, 151 South Carolina black bear were harvested by hunters.

The whitetail deer population of South Carolina is estimated to be 725,000. Deer exist in all 46 counties in the state. In 2011, 116,755 bucks were harvested and 105,894 doe. South Carolina has the longest firearm-hunting season in the country.

The top counties for South Carolina turkey hunting in 2011 were: Fairfield, Williamsburg, Newberry, Orangeburg, and Berkeley. In the spring of 2011, 17,085 turkey were bagged. South Carolina is working on turkey restoration also, but a lot of decreased population has to do with the weather. There are 2 spring turkey seasons in South Carolina and the bag limit is set after a brood estimate.

Alligators occupy a variety of wetland habitats in South Carolina such as marshes, swamps, rivers, farm ponds, and lakes. Hunting gators in South Carolina is by a draw hunt. In 2011, 1,200 gator permits were issued and 379 alligators were harvested by hunters. The largest alligator was 13 foot 6 inches.

The top hog hunting counties in South Carolina are Allendale, Abbeville, Calhoun, Charleston, and Anderson. Small game offered in South Carolina is dove, quail, squirrel, rabbit, raccoon, opossum, fox, beaver, mink, bobcat, weasel, and skunk. Waterfowl that can be hunted is ducks, teal, mergansers, and geese. Non-toxic shot must be used and you will need a permit if hunting on a waterfowl management area. Also a Federal Duck Stamp is required. If you were born before June 30, 1979, you will need a Hunter’s Education Certificate.
