SIKA DEER HUNTING

SIKA DEER OUTFITTER

Sika deer, also known as the spotted deer or the Japanese deer are closely related to the elk. They are reddish brown to black in color and are spotted. They also have a black stripe down their back to and around a white rump area. The Sika stags also grow a mane and weigh between 100-250 pounds. Stags have narrow upright antlers (10-25 inches) and usually have no more than 3 points while females have two black bumps on their forehead. There are four different types of Sika deer in the United State: Manchurian, Dybowski, Japanese, and Formosan. All races will interbreed.

The largest free roaming Sika herds in the United States are in Texas, Maryland, and Virginia, especially Assateague Island. They were brought here in the early 1900’s. There are many herds confined to game farms elsewhere in the United States and Canada. Sika deer feed on plants, grasses, trees, and barks, and can do a lot of damage while eating. They are active all day long unless there are near humans and then prefer to go about only at dusk/nighttime. Stags often will harm each other during their rut, also known as the “roar”. They will bugle during this time. Stags are also solitary until the breeding time.

Browse our big game outfitters to plan your Sika deer hunt. Some of the best states to hunt Sika deer include Maryland, Texas, and Virginia or an outfitter offering exotic hunts.
