Oklahoma Hunting

Oklahoma has small mountain ranges, prairie, and eastern forests. It goes from high plains in the west to low wetlands in the southeastern part of the state. You can hunt a wide array of species in Oklahoma, which has more than 1.6 million acres of Wildlife Management Areas. You can hunt turkey, whitetail deer, mule deer, elk, and more in Oklahoma.

Antelope are seen mostly in western Oklahoma in the panhandle region. The Oklahoma antelope population is about 3,100. Antelope are hunted by gun in a controlled hunt with a license by a drawing lottery. They also may be hunted with an archery license. In 2010, 253 Oklahoma antelope were bagged during the OK hunting season.

There is a growing population of black bear in southeast Oklahoma. Black bear are hunted by archery and muzzleloader only. You must check daily if the quota has been met. If it has been met, then the season is over. In 2011, 31 bears were harvested during Oklahoma hunts.

There are two types of deer in Oklahoma: the whitetail deer and mule deer. The population of whitetail deer is about 500,000. In 2010, 109,314 Oklahoma whitetail deer were harvested of which 63,314 were bucks. Oklahoma mule deer are mostly seen in the panhandle counties. About 250 Oklahoma mule deer are harvested each year during the hunting season.

Oklahoma has the largest free-ranging elk herd found on the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. They are also seen on other WMA. The estimated Oklahoma elk population is about 800. In 2010, 182 elk were harvested. This is a “once-in-a-lifetime” hunt.

Oklahoma Mountain Lion may be hunted year round when it becomes a safety hazard or if they are killing domestic animals. Small Game/Game Birds offered are: prairie dog, squirrel, cottontail rabbit, jackrabbit, swamp rabbit, feral hogs, quail, and pheasant. Migratory Birds are: dove, rail, gallinole, woodcock, snipe, coot, teal, and Canadian goose. You will need a Federal Duck Stamp and a HIP (harvest information program) permit to hunt these. Also only non-toxic shot may be used.

There are two different kinds of turkey in OK: the Rio Grande and the Eastern turkey. The population of the Rio turkey is about 115,000 and they are seen across most of the state. The population of Eastern turkey is about 13,000 and they are seen mostly in the southeastern part of the state. Hunters can hunt Oklahoma turkey during a fall and spring season.

Rattlesnakes may also be hunted. Furbearers need a trapping license for this. You may trap: bobcat, gray fox, red fox, raccoon, opossum, weasel, beaver, nutria, striped skunk, river otter (check counties open for this), and coyotes. A Hunter’s Education Certificate is required if you are 36 or younger. Also written permission of a landowner must be carried with you if hunting on private land.
