Ohio Hunting

Ohio offers some of the best areas to hunt mature whitetails in North America. This is due to their deer management program and the harvesting of more does than bucks. Ohio is home to the #2 world record non-typical buck. In addition to great whitetail deer hunting, Ohio also offers excellent hunting for turkey, black bear, waterfowl, and more!

When whitetail deer hunting in Ohio, you may use a gun, muzzleloader or a bow to hunt. Deer harvest has been good near Lake LaSuan, Cooper Hollow, and Egypt Wildlife areas. Coshocton County has led in deer kill in recent years. The southwestern part of Ohio is rapidly gaining fame for big bucks. In 2010, 239,475 deer were taken, with 86,017 being buck. Many trophy bucks have been taken in the mideastern counties and Ashtabula county. To hunt deer, you will also need a permit to hunt besides your license.

Ohio turkey hunting is also excellent. Turkeys are found throughout Ohio and the estimated population is about 230,000 birds. The best bird hunting is noted to be near Salt Fork, Jockey Hollow, and Woodbury Wildlife areas. In the spring season of 2010, 23,421 turkey were taken during the Ohio hunting season. Ohio also offers an excellent opportunity to hunt waterfowl. You may choose from ducks, coots, mergansers, Canadian geese, light geese, white-fronted geese, and Brandts. You will need a Harvest Information Program Certificate, an Ohio Wetlands Habitat Stamp, in addition to your hunting license. A Federal Migratory Stamp is also needed (duck stamp).

Small game in Ohio that may be hunted is squirrel, rabbit, pheasant, quail, dove, grouse, and fox. Wild Boar also may be hunted anytime and anywhere. There is no limit set on them either. Trapping is available too. Beaver (in certain areas), fox, raccoon, mink, and river otter (special counties) are some that can be taken. All first time trappers must take a Trapper Education Course. The hunter also must possess a Fur taker permit. To obtain an Ohio license you must provide a valid previous license or a Hunter Education Certificate.
