North Carolina Hunting

North Carolina offers some excellent hunting and trapping opportunities for all, from novice to seasoned hunter. Wildlife is thriving from mountains to coast including black bear, whitetail deer, turkey, wild boar, and more!

 

Black bear are thriving in North Carolina, which now has two hunting seasons (November, December). There are an estimated 11,000 bear living on 10 million acres in the state. In 2010, 1,701 black bear were taken in North Carolina with 1,060 being male.

 

Northampton County tops the charts with the most whitetail deer per square mile. Different areas of the state have different seasons and different limits also. Please check these prior to hunting. In 2010, a total of 175,157 whitetail deer were bagged in North Carolina with 80,430 being antlered bucks and 142,406 were taken by gun.

 

North Carolina offers excellent turkey hunting as well. In the spring season of 2011, 14,476 turkey were bagged with 11,461 being adult gobblers. In the winter season of 2009, a total of 98 were taken with 36 being male.

 

Wild Boar have neither a closed season nor any bag limits in North Carolina. Non-residents must have a wild boar-hunting license. Small game offered is raccoon, fox (must be taken with dogs only), opossum, pheasant, squirrel, rabbit, quail, grouse, and bobcat (this is closed in the Haywood County on the Harmon Den and Sherwood Bear Sanctuaries).

 

North Carolina waterfowl hunting offered is Tundra Swan (need a permit), Canadian goose (check hunt zones), and ducks. A Federal Duck Stamp is required. Also you need a Harvest Information Program certification for this. Non-toxic shot must also be used. Trapping may be done also from the mountains to the coast, a wide variety of trapping opportunities exist. Namely: beaver, bobcat (wooded habitats of coastal plains and mountains support largest number), coyote, gray fox, mink, muskrat, river otter, red fox, and weasel.

 

All first time license buyers must have a hunter education certificate. Come to North Carolina and check out all of the opportunities that await you.
