New Jersey Hunting

New Jersey or “The Garden State” is the 4th smallest state in the country, but is well known for it's hunting. The state is made up of 4 main land regions. The Atlantic Coastal Plain covers about 3/5 of NJ. It has gentle rolling hills and is less than 100 feet above sea level. It has pine forests to salt marshes. The Piedmont area is to the northeast of the Atlantic Coastal Plain and covers about 1/5 of NJ. This is the “industrial area” of NJ. West of The Piedmont is New England Upland or “The Highlands”. This area has flat- topped ridges of rock with many lakes among the ridges. In the northwest corner of the state are the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region. This is a mountainous area (Kittatinny Mountains). The Delaware Water Gap is where the Delaware River cut through the Kittatinny Mountains.

New Jersey has a whitetail deer population of more than 200,000. It boasts a long deer hunting season and generous bag limits (they differ in each zone). There are 750,000 acres of public land open to the hunter. Some areas that are tops for deer hunting are: Worthington State Forest and Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area, Whittingham WMA, and Wharton State Forest. If you never have had a license, a Hunter-Ed course is required (for archery, rifle, muzzleloader, crossbow, and shotgun, -- a test is given for each). Also, a NJ Rifle permit and permits for muzzleloader, shotgun and archery are needed besides a license. In the 2010-2011 season, 55,404 New Jersey whitetail deer were taken.

The New Jersey Turkey population is 20,000-22,000. The average New Jersey turkey harvest has been about 3000+ yearly. There is a spring and fall turkey season. A permit is required to hunt turkey and is awarded by the “lottery” system. If there are extra permits, they will be sold over-the-counter on a first- come first-served basis. The southern part of the state has a better success rate for turkey.

New Jersey Black Bear are seen in every county. The black bear population is 3500+. In 2011, 469 New Jersey bears were taken by hunters. You must apply for a bear permit and hunt where your permit allows only. There are 4 bear hunt areas. After harvesting a bear you must tag it and take it to a “check station” by 7 p.m.

New Jersey has some of the best Waterfowl hunting on the East Coast. Birds are abundant across the state. One-third of Black Ducks and two-thirds of North American Atlantic Brant spend winter here. Migratory birds you may hunt are: woodcocks, snipe, rails, coots, moorhens, ducks, geese, and Brant. You will need a HIP (harvest information program) permit, a Federal Duck Stamp and a NJ Waterfowl Stamp. Non-toxic shot must be used.

Small game you can hunt in NJ includes rabbit, squirrel, pheasants (stocked on WMA), quail (released on 2 WMA), coyote, and fox. Bobwhites are protected. Trapping can be done for: raccoon, fox, opossum, mink, otter, and beaver. A “Trapper’s Course” must be taken prior to buying a license. Law protects bobcats.
