More information

Nebraska Hunting

Nebraska was once called “The Great American Desert” due to the terrain and their crops.  This is a great state for whitetail deer hunting.  Record numbers of elk and whitetail deer have been seen in 2011. Whitetail deer are abundant throughout the state of Nebraska and can be very large. A record number of whitetail deer were taken in 2010, which was 77,028. The Nebraska state record typical whitetail was harvested in 2010. Mule deer are seen more in central and western Nebraska and will cohabitate with whitetail deer. In 2010, 10,800 mule deer were harvested.

Turkey is also abundant throughout the state of Nebraska. In the fall season of 2009, 10,853 turkey were taken and 24,182 were taken in the 2010 spring turkey season.

Antelope are primarily seen in the west and central parts of Nand population is on the increase. Two state record antelope bucks were taken in 2010. In 2010, firearms took 483 bucks and 26 doe. Archery yielded 185 and muzzleloader 99.

Nebraska Elk are found in the wild, mostly in the western part of the state, and on game farms. In 2010, 166 elk were taken in Nebraska, with 79% being bulls. The population continues to expand in the state. It was estimated at 2,300 in 2010. Elk licenses are for resident or non-resident landowners. Many Nebraska elk outfitters offer these hunts though.

Bighorn Sheep are also seen in the western part of the state. The Wildcat Hills and Pine Ridge areas of Nebraska are noted areas for them. This license is by the lottery system and for Nebraska residents or non-resident landowners. These can still be hunted at an outfitter ranch.

Furbearing is also done in Nebraska. Bobcat, muskrat, beaver, raccoon, opossum, weasel, mink, red fox, gray fox and badgers are some animals that can be harvested. In 2010, 1,530 bobcats were harvested (hunting and trapped) alone. Coyotes numbered 21,000+ for hunting and trapping. Small game offered is squirrel, cottontail rabbit, jackrabbit, dove, snipe, grouse, woodcock, pheasant, quail, partridge, and crow. Please check regarding bag limits and areas to hunt and season dates. Nebraska Habitat Stamp is required for all big game hunters.
