More information

Massachusetts Hunting

Massachusetts is The Bay State and is known for the Appalachian Mountain system in the west and sandy beaches and rocky shorelines of the Atlantic Ocean in the east. Despite the dense population of people, 62% of the state is forested. Massachusetts offers excellent whitetail deer, black bear, turkey hunting, and more!

Massachusetts’ population of whitetail deer is roughly between 85,000-95,000. They are seen throughout the state. In 2011, 11,154 were harvested. You may harvest 2 antlered deer per year and as many antlerless deer as you may have permits for. Quality deer can be found throughout the state. In the past 3 years, 11 bucks were taken that would qualify for “Boone and Crockett” awards.

The black bear population is healthy and growing. The “central” part of the state is “good” but the “western” part is “better”. The best counties are Berkshire and Hampden. Hunting to the west of the Connecticut River is “the rule of thumb”. You do need a “bear hunting permit” besides your basic license and if you are a non-resident you will require a “big-game” license. In Massachusetts you may hunt bear over bait and with dogs. Upon killing a bear, you must take it to a check station within 48 hours.

Turkey hunting continues to improve in Massachusetts. Hunting is by “permit only”. You are also required to have a “safety sticker” on the barrel of your gun. These you can get when you purchase your license and are free. In 2009, 3000+ turkeys were harvested. Please check with the State Forests/Parks for restrictions regarding hunting there. Also there is a “spring controlled turkey hunt” at Camp Edward's base. You just must check in at a location (check where this is each year) and receive a permit. Turkeys must also be seen at a check station.

Waterfowl that may be hunted is: rails, snipe, woodcock, ducks, coot, mergansers, geese, Canadian Geese, Blue Geese, brant, and sea ducks. Please check for season dates and bag limits. A Federal Duck Stamp and a MA Waterfowl Stamp are required also. Non-toxic shot must also be used. You must complete a HIP (harvest information program) to obtain a number after buying your license.

Upland game birds you may hunt are: crows, pheasants, quail, and grouse. Moose are protected in Massachusetts. The population is 1000 +/-. Most are seen in northern Worcester County. Small game you may hunt is: rabbits, squirrel, snowshoe hares, and jackrabbits. Furbearers—All first time trappers are required to take the “Trapper Education Class” of the Hunter Education Program. Furbearers that you may hunt/trap are bobcat, coyote, red fox, gray fox, raccoon, and opossum. You must but a “trapping license”. Please check for bag limits and times /zones you may hunt and if you must take your harvest to a “check station”

A Hunter’s Education Certificate is required by anyone who doesn’t have a prior valid license. All minors age15-17 must produce a Hunter’s Ed Certificate to buy a license or a letter from their parents stating that they will be under their supervision at all times.
