Maryland Hunting

Maryland or “America in Miniature” is the name that was given due to the states wide variety of topography--from sandy dunes to mountains. The Coastal Plain area covers about one half of Maryland’s land area, which then yields into the Piedmont Plateau. The Catoctin Ridgeline in the west is the gateway to the Appalachians. The Eastern Shore area is extensive wetlands, which provides excellent waterfowl hunting.

Bear hunting in Maryland is by a draw permit. Western Maryland has a thriving population of black bear, especially in Garrett and Allegany Counties (bear season just reopened in 2004). In 2010, 260 permits were given out and 67 bear were harvested. The bear population in 2005 was approximately 326. A new assessment was made and the results should be made public in 2012.

Whitetail deer and Sika deer can both be hunted in Maryland. The Whitetail population is about 300,000 and the Sika deer about 10,000 as of 2011. In the 2011-2012 season, over 9,8000 whitetail were taken and 2,600 Maryland Sika deer were killed. The quality of habitat has produced some impressive trophy buck. Sika deer are found in marshes, swamps, wet woodlands, and agriculture fields of the lower eastern shore. The Maryland sika deer population exists mostly on Assateague Island and Dorchester Counties. A Bow Stamp is required if hunting archery, as well as a Muzzleloader Stamp if hunting with a muzzleloader. There is Sunday hunting allowed in some areas of Maryland.

The Maryland turkey population has been stable the past ten years. It is roughly around 30,000. The highest population is in the Western Region and Eastern Shore Region. In the fall of 2010, 171 birds were bagged by hunters. In the spring of 2011, 2,826 turkey were taken during the hunting seasons.

Maryland has a rich tradition of waterfowl hunting. You can hunt for Teal, Canadian geese, Light Geese, Brandts, Coots, and Mergansers. A Snow Goose Conservation Permit and a Migratory Game Bird Stamp with a H.I.P. (harvest information program) permit are required. A Federal Duck Stamp may be needed as well.

Furbearers need a permit and also a non-resident trapping license. You may trap coyotes, fox, muskrat, mink, nutria, raccoon, skunk, weasel, beaver, and bobcat. Coyotes may be hunted anytime and there is no limit. Small game offered is grouse, gray and eastern squirrel, rabbit, pheasant, and quail.
