CARIBOU HUNTING

CARIBOU OUTFITTER

Caribou or “reindeer” are found in northern areas of North America in forests, mountains and on the tundra. Caribou are large animals and they can weigh between 200-600 pounds. Their large hooves support them on snow, aid them in swimming, and the underside is hollow for digging. The hoof is also sharp and helps on ice and rocky terrain. Both sexes can have antlers, although female antlers are smaller. A caribou's antlers can grow to to more than 4 feet and they grow forward from their head. Antlers, a show of dominance, are usually shed in November or December except in pregnant females. The caribou’s coat provides insulation from the weather as it consists of 2 layers. There is approximately 1 million caribou in Alaska. Caribou eat grasses, plants, lichen, and mushrooms. They can eat in excess of 10 pounds of food per day. Caribou will travel many miles during their migration. Cows start the migration, along with their yearling calves, heading north in the summer and south in the winter. Females will have 1 calf each year and the calf is able to walk shortly after birth. Check out our Caribou hunts offered by our outfitters and hunting guides.
